Harvest Report 2012

 

Growing Season: After a rather mild and wet December the change of weather in February was more than welcome. It was the coldest February in Rheingau since 2001 and so we were able to harvest a small but fine batch of Eiswein in the Geisenheimer Rothenberg.

March, however, was too warm and dry and was followed by very unsettled and cool April-weather. Minus temperatures of -3°C on April 17th fortunately did not cause any damage on the vines and on 28th April, finally the budding started. Night temperatures of below 10°C around 6th June resulted in a very inconsistent flowering development. From 24th July on, the rather wet weather conditions calmed down and were followed by summerlike temperatures and decreasing rainfall. Ripening of teh grapes started mid August.

Must weight: 75° Oechsle – 100° Oechsle

Acid content: 7,0 -11,5 g/l

Duration of grape harvest: 1st October  - 8th November

The wines: Already during the fermentation, the wines proved to be fine and fruity with an animating acidity.

Highlights: It is very rare, that we can so elaborately hand-select the grapes twice in our GrandCru sites as we did it this year! Even beginning of November we could pick perfectly healthy Riesling-grapes. The physiological ripe and late harvested grapes are the foundation first and foremost for our dry premium qualities as Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg, Geisenheimer Rothenberg and Geheimrat "J". The healthy grapes that are designed for the Eiswein are only comparable with the ones we had back in 1983.
