RPR1. Listen to Wine

The broadcast Listen to Wine by the German radio station RPR1. is all about enjoying wine.

In February, the RPR1. moderator Kunze stopped by the Weingüter Wegeler in the Rheingau. A close friendship with Ludwig van Beethoven motivated the winery to create a wine edition for the Beethoven anniversay year 2020.

You can listen to the German podcast here to find out why the great wines from the Weingüter Wegeler are always popular at state receptions and what Queen Elizabeth drank there.

Pop Up Winebar - Great Wines in the Glass

Oliver Bock, famous journalist and wine gourmet in the Rheingau, writes in his wine blog: "I hope this will become a tradition! I tasted plenty of the best wines [...], so this Winebar is recommended for repetition and imitation!"

Enjoy great wines from us and from renowned colleagues by the glass in Zalto glasses - now always on the 1st Saturday of the month!

The dates for the first half of 2020 can be found in our event calendar.

Wine Rarity of the Weingüter Wegeler Auctioned for Around 4,000 Euro in Trier

During the famous Mosel Auction of rare wines, which took place in Trier on  September 20th, 2019, more than 13,000 bottles were auctioned. One of these bottles was our 1959 Trockenbeerenauslese from the famous Bernkasteler Doctor - the most expensive and first vineyard in Germany which received 100 points from Robert Parker for a dry Riesling (Weingut Molitor). A Riesling lover spent a lot of money for the 0.7 liter bottle: 4,057.90 € was the final bid (3,100 € final bid + 5% commission + 5% award subsequent + VAT; Source: VDP Mosel).

"Actually, this wine is priceless."

Fabian Theiss, Managing Director VDP Mosel

"Winery of the Year" in the Rheingau - Vinum Wineguide 2019

We would like to thank everyone who has accompanied us during the last eventful years! We are very happy about three big awards in a row:

2019 Vinum: Winery of the Year in the Rheingau

2018 Falstaff: Collection of the year

2017 Gault Millau: Promoted Winery of the year

Significantly involved are the Rieslings from the Geisenheimer Rothenberg. In less than a decade, the Rothenberg brought us new wines of world renown. This shows us that the renaissance of large historic vineyards is in full swing.

Rheingau? Rheingau!

We winemakers and wine lovers know, of course, where the Rheingau lies and what makes this region so special. For all other "ignorant" there is an entertaining new "explanatory video" from the VDP.Rheingau. It's about origin, good wines and good sparkling wines.

Vinordic - Wine Challenge 2018

During the Vinordic Wine Challenge 2018 our 2015 Wegeler Riesling Rheingau Charta was awarded with the Gold Trophy and Best Value in its price category among all white wines.

Falstaff Sekt Trophy 2018 goes to the Weingüter Wegeler

During ProWein, the wine guide Falstaff Deutschland chose the best German sparkling wines. The best Riesling sparkling wine in Germany comes from the Weingüter Wegeler from the historical vineyard Geisenheimer Rothenberg. The 2013 Geisenheim Rothenberg Riesling Sekt Brut reached the top score of all German sparkling wines with 95 points, together with Sekthaus Raumland.

We also have a reason to celebrate withour 2011 Geheimrat "J" Rheingau Riesling Sekt Brut: With 92 points, it is among the TOP 3 of the Rheingau Riesling sparkling wines.

These awards are a further confirmation that not only great wines but also great sparkling wines come from the Rhine and Moselle.

Falstaff "Collection of the Year" goes to the Weingüter Wegeler

On Thursday, November 30th, 2017, Falstaff awards the Weingüter Wegeler with the "Collection of the Year 2018" award. This award is valid for both estates of the wineries in the winegrowing areas Rheingau and Mosel. It highlights the historical significance of Mosel and Rheingau as two of the most important Riesling winegrowing regions in the world.

You can read more about the award here.

We are extremely proud about the latest distinction for our 2016 GGs on Jancisrobinson.com. The Rosengarten and Jesuitengarten GG were awarded each the top score of 18 points. Comments on the latter were

"Classic Riesling nose combines mineral and herbal elements with plenty of ripe fruit. On the palate, the performance of Wegeler’s Jesuitengarten rests on the four pillars of juicy fruit, animating acidity, rich texture and subtle minerality. Structure and elegance make this one of the top GGs of the vintage."

Our 2016er GGs Berg Schlossberg and Rothenberg received 17.5 points each

Comments regarding all 2016 GGs are to be found here

The Rheingau is back

Stuart Pigott, contributing editor for jamessuckling.com, came to visit the Rheingau in July an tasted nearly 400 wines from the 2015 and 2016 vintage. His overall verdict: "The Rheingau is back". He awarded the 2016 Rothenberg Trockenbeerenauslese 97 points and commented

"This is a massive, very sweet TBA with all the richness and power you expect from this category. The dynamic acidity drives the very long finish like a formula one sports car, but the wine still several years off optimum drinking age. Try to be patient through at least 2023 because then this will be packed with honey and dried fruits character. Great potential!"

Ratings for our Mosel sweets

Stuart Pigott, contributing editor for jamessuckling.com, underwent a comparative tasting of the two "miraculous" vintages 2015 and 2016 at the Mosel.

He commented our 2016 Badstube Kabinett, 2015 Sonnenuhr Spätlese, 2016 Doctor Auslese and 2015 Doctor Spätlese as well as our 2015 Doctor Beerenauslese:

"First comes a wave of super-ripe tropical fruit aromas. The succulence hits you, but then the wave slides rather quickly back into the ocean. The finish is clean and straight. Better from 2020 and should be good for another 20 years after that." - Stuart Piggot

His 2016 ratings are found here and those of 2015 here.

Doctor at the Top

The independent US Wineguide is listing our 2015 Doctor GG among the 30 best dry Riesling of the vintage.

"Despite the intrinsic power of the vintage, the list of highlights is heavily tilted towards high end wines, i.e. “GG and equivalent.” In particular, Weingut Fritz Haag, Weingut von Kesselstatt,Weingut Schloss Lieser, Weingut Van Volxem and Weingut Wegeler produced some stunning dry Riesling which are clearly their best ever." - Mosel Fine Wines 28.11.2016

Major Upgrade

Wegeler Estates Rheingau have been upgraded to 4 grapes by the latest edition of Gault&Millau 2017.

With great joy have we accepted the recognition of our continious quest for quality. As of now our estate stands in the categorie

"Excellent production, belonging to the best wineries in Germany."

This award will motivate us to continue implementing our vision of international rieslings from Rhine and Moselle.

Welcome at Wegeler Estates!

We are a family-run estate with a sense for our history and tradition. Since 4 generations now, we share the same passion for Riesling, which we cultivate to a 100% in our vineyards along the Rhine and the Mosel river banks.

Our credo is "quality is our philosophy" and that is the way we work today, just like 130 years ago, when our estate had been founded. We produce exclusively high-quality Riesling: with traditional, ecological wine-growing and mostly with manual work.

You can taste and buy our wines from Rhine and Mosel as well as the ones of our partner vinery KRONE Assmannhausen in our Rheingau Estate in Oestrich-Winkel.

Our tasting-room is open Monday – Friday between 08:00 h and 17:00 h, on Saturdays and Sundays between 11:00 h and 16:00 h. Should you wish to visit us outside these opening hours, we are happy to make an individual arrangement.

We hope to welcome you soon !
