The first and foremost factor for the quality of the wine is the location of the vineyard.
With 16 different 'Erste Gewächs' (Grand Crus) vineyard sites, we have an unique portfolio of sites of extremely different terroirs. Julius Wegeler had already been aware of the fact that even an premium vineyard will not produce great Rheingau vintages in every year. However, prime products will come from different vineyards every year, depending on the weather. This knowledge was the basis for his philosophy to cultivate as many top-vineyards as possible of different terroirs and microclimates of the Rheingau.
From grapes cultivated with love and passion, harvested by hand and matured gently in our own cellars, we are thus in a position to produce extremely accomplished Riesling wines (almost) every year.
Furthermore, this huge portfolio of sites is the unique basis for our great Geheimrat "J", the internationally renowned Geheimrat "J" sparkling wine, for WEGELER PUR, and for our Wegeler Riesling - all these wines bearing the fingerprint of our Rheingau estate.
The characteristics of the individual vineyard sites are most distinctly present in the wines from the Rothenberg in Geisenheim and the Berg Schlossberg in Rüdesheim.
